In 1945 shortly after the end of the second world war Hugh Powell-Cullingford bought a house called Fairoak in Esher and started a dental practice.
The family lived in the flat above the practice until they moved to Ripley. Hugh and his wife Peggy had three children, Mary, Gillian and Andrew. Mary took after her father and trained as a Dentist
at Guys Hospital in London, Gillian became an Optometrist and Andrew also followed their father to Guys, qualifying as a Dentist in 1984. He then did a postgraduate in root canal treatment, specialising in Endodontics.
Hugh retired from general practice in 1985 and Andrew took
over the business At this time, Gillian was looking to relocate
her optometric practice from London.
Fairview, the house next to Fairoak, became available in
1989 and Gillian started "Haig-Brown Optometry" here. In the early 90's Andrew and Gillian joined the two houses and the combined building is now know as "Fairoak". It comprises of both the Dental and Optical Practices on the ground floor and Physiotherapy on the first floor.
Gillian's daughter Nicola joined the practice in December 2003, having completed her training in Cardiff and working at Kingston Royal Eye Unit for a year.
Fairoak really IS a family business and we look forward to
looking after your family for many generations.
