Nicola Haig-Brown

BSc(hons), MCOptom, FBDO

Optometrist Director

Nicola, Gillian’s daughter, first joined the family practice as a Saturday assistant in 1996. In 1998 she went to City and Islington College to study Dispensing Optics. In 2000 she began her Optometry degree at Cardiff University.

In 2003 she began work as an Optometrist at the practice after graduating from Cardiff University with a BSc(Hons) in Optometry and Vision Science. Nicola then gained her Ophthalmology Diploma from Middlesex University in 2011 under the tutelage of Miss Ann Gilvarry, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Lead Clinician at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Currently Nicola is studying for the College of Optometrists Independent prescribing qualification and is back at the Royal Surrey Hospital working with Miss Gilvarry one day a week.

One of Nicola’s specialisms is myopia control using either Orthokeratology or with specialist daily disposable soft contact lenses. Orthokeratology is a technique using  customised rigid gas permeable contact lenses which are worn overnight and then removed, allowing the patient to have clear vision throughout the day and reducing the rate at which their short-sightedness progresses. The latest specialist daily disposable contact lenses are called MiSight and are worn during the day for a minimum of 12 hours.

Nicola has always been progressive in her thinking and embraces new technology, using the latest in OCT scanners and investing in the latest equipment for the practice to give the best health care and service to her patients.

Nicola also enjoys providing paediatric eyecare and thoroughly enjoys making sure that any children that visit the practice are not only relaxed and comfortable with eye examinations, but are excited to learn about how best to care for their eyes. Nicola excels in connecting with children and can rely on her extensive knowledge and experience in both primary eye care and the hospital eye service.

Delighting her patients with excellent eyecare gives Nicola a huge sense of satisfaction and motivation. Her work is rewarded by building long-term relationships with her patients, often treating many generations of the same family and the majority of her new patients are referred by word of mouth recommendations.

When Nicola has free time she enjoys spending it with her husband and dog and likes skiing and exploring new capital cities!
