Shortly after the end of the Second World War in 1945, Hugh Powell-Cullingford bought a house called Fairoak in Esher and started a dental practice.
Hugh, his wife and three children, Mary, Gill and Andrew, lived in the flat above the practice. Mary and Andrew went on to follow in their father’s footsteps and trained as dentists at Guy’s Hospital in London. When Hugh retired in 1985, Andrew took over the dental practice.
Gill trained as an optometrist, graduating from City University in 1973. After working in London, Gill moved back to Esher in 1989 to start Haig-Brown Optometrists in Fairoak, where the practice remains today, alongside the dental practice.
Gill’s daughter Nicola joined the practice in December 2003, having completed her training in Cardiff, she has further postgraduate qualifications in Ophthalmology and is currently completing her Independent Prescribing examinations.
In May 2012 Jayne Comyn joined us as our third Optometrist, she like Gill is an alumni of City University. Jayne has previously worked in London in a general and contact lens practice.
Gill retired in February 2017 and now enjoys tending to her farm and working hard at her new job as chair of Ripley Village Hall Development Committee. Gill continues to act as a business consultant and sounding board for the team on a regular basis.
Following Gill’s retirement, Melissa McErlane joined us. Melissa is an alumni of Manchester University and alongside her work in general practice is a Johnson and Johnson Professional Services Consultant, in her role she educates other Optometrists about soft contact lenses.
All three of our Optometrists are experienced in paediatric eye care.
Haig-Brown truly is a family business and we look forward to looking after your family for many generations to come.
